My husband and I have been trying to find a good co-op PC game for awhile. So co-op games require you to play with a certain number of people for it to be any fun, and usually the two of us just want to play together. We’ve also tried a few RPGs as co-ops but so many of those are story heavy and long, and when you only have a few hours every now and then to play, it is nice to have a game that you can easily drop in and out of.

So when Deep Rock Galactic had a free weekend on Steam earlier this month, we figured why not give it a try. How can a game about space dwarves mining alien-infested asteroids not be fun?

It was everything I had hoped for. The game mechanics are simple enough that you can jump in and start playing. There are four different kinds of dwarves, each with unique skills – scout, gunner, engineer and digger. Each dwarf is armed with two guns, grenades and then two special items that fit their class. As you play, you earn credits to spend at the shop, upgrading your weapons and armor (or your beard). You also get “perks” for completing game milestones which let you have special bonuses, like improved speed or (my favorite) less fall damage.

So far we both have two characters over level 10 and two others that are level 7. We’ve already logged 45 hours with the game. Each assignment usually takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the type of mission and what level of difficulty you’re playing.

Each planet is a randomly generated dungeon so you never play the same map twice. But each zone has its own quirks – from ice, fire and dense vegetation. Sometimes the missions will have bonuses or debuffs that can make things a little more interesting and keep you on your toes. We’ve been to a zone where our pix axes did extra damage so we spent a lot more time whacking the bugs with your axes. And then another zone with an alien ghost that we had to avoid.

The game is still in early access but updates have been coming fast and furious recently. I haven’t seen any game breaking glitches, it feels pretty solid.
